Understanding Astigmatism

and How It Affects Your Vision

What Is Astigmatism? How Is It Diagnosed? How Do You Treat It?

Do you know someone who suffers from

Astigmatism?

Chances are you do, even if you don’t know it. It’s one of the most common causes of blurred vision, including both nearsightedness and farsightedness. In fact, while about one in three people need corrective lenses or other treatment for astigmatism, nearly everyone has some degree of astigmatism. In virtually every instance, though, it’s easily treatable. We can help.

Astigmatism FAQs

What Is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is not as scary as the name might suggest—it’s simply an uneven curvature of your cornea or lens. Ideally, the surface of your eye should be round—with astigmatism, it tends to be egg-shaped. It’s also pretty common for the curvature of one eye to be different than the other eye, making it difficult to focus.

What Causes Astigmatism?

Most commonly, astigmatism is congenital and hereditary. It can, however, be caused by other conditions, including:

  • The pressure that your eyelids put on your cornea
  • An eye injury
  • A surgical procedure
  • The thinning of your cornea as you age
What Are the Symptoms of Astigmatism?

The most common indication of astigmatism is distorted or blurred vision. It may also cause headaches or eye strain, or lead to squinting or diminished night vision.

How Is Astigmatism Diagnosed?

An eye exam that includes a refractive assessment (which determines how your eyes bend light) will allow your eye doctor to diagnose astigmatism and determine the prescription for corrective lenses.

How Can Astigmatism Be Treated?

Astigmatism is almost always easily treated with corrective lenses, either in frames or with contact lenses.
