Farsightedness FAQs

What Is Farsightedness?

Farsightedness is a refractive condition in your eyes that affects the amount of light that comes through your lens and changes where your eyes naturally focus. It’s caused by the natural shape of your eyeball, where the distance from the front to the back of your eye is too short, compromising your focus.

What Causes Farsightedness?

Farsightedness is generally congenital and hereditary, which distinguishes it from presbyopia, which develops over your lifetime. You may not experience many of the symptoms of farsightedness until your teens or early adulthood, as the lenses in your eyes are initially soft, flexible and easy to adjust. As you age, though, your lenses harden, making it progressively more difficult to make the necessary adjustments to focus on objects that are close to you.

What Are the Common Symptoms of Hyperopia?
The symptoms of farsightedness look much like the symptoms of myopia, or nearsightedness, except that your focus will be different. With farsightedness, you can still expect to have to squint, but only to view objects that are close to you. You’ll have blurred vision, but only with respect to nearby things. Hyperopia also causes eyestrain/pain, most often when working on close-up tasks.

What Are the Consequences of Untreated Farsightedness?

Failing to take steps to address hyperopia can, eventually, cause you to become mildly or even severely cross-eyed. You’ll likely experience eyestrain and headaches and may become frustrated as you continually drop or break things that are close by.

How Is Farsightedness Diagnosed?

An eye doctor can identify hyperopia by conducting a basic eye examination that includes refractive assessment.

What Is the Best Treatment for Farsightedness?

In almost every instance, hyperopia can be effectively addressed with corrective lenses or contacts.
