Nearsightedness FAQs

What Is Nearsightedness?

Nearsightedness is a common vision problem characterized by the inability to focus on objects at a distance. It’s caused by refractory defects, which affect how light travels through your biological lenses. Those defects cause images to focus in front of your retina, rather than on it, leading to blurriness. It’s most often hereditary and typically first appears during adolescence.

What Are the Common Symptoms of Myopia?
If you are experiencing any of the following, you should schedule an appointment with our optometrist to determine whether you are nearsighted:

  • Difficulty focusing on objects at a distance
  • Persistent headaches
  • Difficulty seeing the road or other cars while driving (most often at night)
  • Excessive blinking or rubbing of your eyes

With nearsightedness, you’ll often have to squint to see things far away. That may cause you to sit closer to your devices or your television, or to hold books or magazines closer to your eyes.

What Are the Potential Consequences of Nearsightedness?
If not properly treated, myopia can have a number of adverse effects:

  • You can expect additional strain on your eyes
  • The additional strain may increase the risk of retinal tears or detachment, cataracts, glaucoma or other eye problems
  • You can put yourself and others in danger because of your inability to focus
How Is Myopia Diagnosed?

Nearsightedness can quickly and easily be identified with a basic eye exam that includes a refractive assessment. .

How Is Nearsightedness Treated?

Nearsightedness, or myopia, is easily remedied with, either corrective frames or contact lenses.
